25 Privateer: The Diamond In the Rough That Became A Gem

By Chris Glave

Located in the vibrant, family-friendly community of Corte Madera, 25 Privateer Drive is a beautiful home in desperate need of a remodel. Covered in old carpet and desperately dated, this home had great potential but needed updating before its actual market value could be realized. Join me for an exclusive look at how we took this diamond in the rough and turned it into a Corte Madera gem.

Managing the remodel for 25 Privateer was a rewarding challenge. Together with a team of designers and craftsmen, we gave this dated home the update it deserves, starting with the facade. New landscaping was added, and the mismatched front facade was reworked, removing the dated rock. Today, the home has a new exterior with clean lines and fresh, easy-to-maintain landscaping.

Beautiful white oak flooring was installed throughout the home, providing a crisp, consistent look and feel. The bookshelves and fireplace were also re-invented, creating a lovely focal point for the room.

Once covered with musty carpet and dim lighting, the public rooms are now fresh and inviting. The residence spans over 2,500 square feet of living space and features an open layout, perfect for entertaining and everyday living.

Take in sparkling Bay views from the luxurious living room, the dining area, and Chef's kitchen with Bosch appliances and quartz countertops.

Kitchen with before photos

The kitchen, once closed in, is now open. New floating white oak shelves were added, light pendants were improved, new Quartz countertops were added, the cabinets were refinished and painted with Caroline Gull by Benjamin Moore, plus all new appliances were installed.

The kitchen design is modern and sophisticated, making it a great place to cook and entertain.

Sunroom with skylight

An ideal spot to unwind is a cheerful sunroom with a walk-out deck and verdant views of Mount Tam.

Sunroom with adjoining outdoor dining

Now bright and welcoming, the sunroom was previously uninviting. The ceiling was raised to expand the room vertically and to make it more enjoyable by allowing more light to pour into the room via the skylight. A breakfast space was also created, further enhancing the living experience of the home.

Primary bedroom with wood floors

Rest easy at 25 Privateer. The home has a primary suite with a walk-in closet and a private deck.

Primary bathroom with tub

The primary features an ensuite spa-like bathroom with a double vanity, a free-standing soaking tub, and a walk-in shower.

Reformulating the primary suite, we removed coffers for more volume, changed the flooring, and reconfigured the walk-in closet. For the primary bathroom, we wanted to make it sparkle and create a personal space where the new owners could unwind. We added a free-standing tub, a double vanity, and a new private outdoor sitting area to achieve this.

Second bedroom

Two additional updated bedrooms with new flooring, paint, and fixtures complete the sleep space.

Second bathroom

Light and bright, the second powder room has a fun vanity and new everything.

Downstairs living space

Downstairs, the lower level features a fourth bedroom, a third full bathroom, a laundry area, access to the two-car garage, and an expansive family room with French doors leading to a private brick patio and outdoor living area. Once an uninhabitable space, the family room was completely redone from the flooring to the fixtures. We improved the recessed lighting, laundry area, and adjoining outdoor patio, making it functional and friendly.

The fully remodeled third bath on the lower level features a unique tile design from Tile Fever.

Outdoor living is an essential part of life in Corte Madera. Outside demolition was done to create thoughtful spaces for entertaining and relaxing. The deck was removed, the siding was repaired, a terraced garden area was added, and we established a fun outdoor living space on the turf and created a private sitting area outside the primary suite.

When the home hit the market earlier this month, buyers were thrilled. On tour, buyers and agents were lined up for the open house. Within a few days of being on the market, the sellers accepted a solid offer and got the home into contract. This diamond in the rough is now a gem and will bring joy to the new owners for many years!
